The government has
reneged on a pledge to reform the law so that homeowners can repel burglars and not face prosecution.
A major reason for the idea even being considered was the case of Norfolk farmer, Tony Martin. Martin should not have been jailed: the fact is that the vermin who broke into his property were on his land unlawfully.
I take the (perhaps simplistic) view that burglars shouldn't have any rights once they trespass and that homeowners should be entitled to defend their homes, possessions and loved ones as they see fit - not as a court subsequently decides in the cold light of day.
In the US, where burglaries are less common because homeowners are armed, they have a saying: dead men tell no tales. Surely that's the lesson? If a burglar breaks into your home, make sure you get them before they get you.
