Blog Meme: What Were You Doing When...?

TV's Iain Dale has nominated me and so here I go! Where was I when...

Princess Diana's death - 31 August 1997
I had just returned from a nice holiday in the South of France and was woken by telephone by my then girlfriend to be told the news. It was the first time I became aware of the benefits and drawbacks of the 24 news schedule. The BBC kept going back to the same footage and the same interviews with the same questions being asked by the same interviewers. Not much has changed then!

Margaret Thatcher's resignation - 22 November 1990
I was at Tonbridge School. Our A-level Politics teacher had just told us that Mrs Thatcher would not resign. Oops.

Attack on the Twin Towers - 11 September 2001
I was in my then office in Belgravia. I recall calling one of my mates who worked in Canary Wharf and telling him to get the hell out of there. I also recall the slowness of the BBC News website that day. I decided to go home to Fulham to watch it all unfurl. By then the rolling news coverage was much, much better. But like many I had a terrible sense of foreboding as to what other atrocities might ensue.

England's World Cup Semi-Final v Germany - 4 July 1990
I remember watching the World Cup that summer at school. I particularly remember chairs being thrown across the TV room in School House when David Platt got the last minute winner against Belgium in celebration. I cannot, though, remember whether we watched this at school or whether we'd broken up. I remember the crushing disappointment at our penalty takers missing their kicks though. That tournament was ours for the winning - as was Euro '96.

President Kennedy's Assassination - 22 November 1963
I plead the Fifth Amendment. I had nothing to do with it. I was not on the grassy knoll. I did not know Lee Harvey Oswald or Jack Ruby. I was born in 1974.

I now nominate ToryBear, John Redwood, Mike Rouse, Tim Montgomerie and Iain Murray.
