Welcome to 1984 country

The news that 1,000,000 children - that's right, one million - will be on the national DNA database by next year presents the Conservatives with a massive opportunity. It highlights the growth of the surveillance state and the end of the presumption of innocence.

As David Davis said: "A free country is progressively becoming a nation of suspects".

It is a gross assault on our civil liberties (although some of my more authoritarian friends will disagree). It is profoundly un-British. And electorally it could give the Tories a great chance to outflank the Liberal Democrats and to reconnect with younger voters, an increasing number of whom are now voting for and supporting the Tories.

Were I the National Chairman of Conservative Future, I think I'd be looking to run an anti-ID card and anti-surveillance state campaign this autumn during freshers' week, if not before. It would be far more worthwhile than simply rehashing some Warholesque Boris Johnson posters...
